I was first introduced to alternative medicine when I was very young, long before I became a physician, and it partly was the impetus for learning everything I could about the human body, first as an RN and later as an Osteopathic Physician.
During a stressful time in my life, I began having gut problems which took over a decade to find that I suffered from chronic inflammation. Since then I have searched and hoped for an answer to my illness, which I knew was a chronic condition, however the treatment only caused more illness. Years later I revisited alternative options and began a lifelong journey to exploring functional medicine.
As alternative treatments have become more mainstream, the medical establishment has softened somewhat regarding the use of evidence based non-traditional treatments and cures, but few physicians today incorporate them into their practice.
My understanding of health and wellness has always been that each patient has their own wellness goals, and needs their own in-depth exploration of their illness and symptoms, as well as understanding each person’s strengths in this journey of healing. Some illnesses can be It was this spark of reality that led me to become a healer who could find the answers, who was able to offer another approach for patient’s path to wellness, wholeness.
In order to make this happen, I needed to go back to being the student, accept that some in my profession would question my choices in treating with functional medicine. But as a patient, I frankly wasn’t worried what they thought when the results of my health journey took a sharp turn with the use of functional medicine. To clarify, I didn’t toss away all of the medications I was taking or the care plan my Doctors laid out for me, and I don’t expect or want anyone else to. Until we have found the cause of the symptoms and are sure we can or have resolved the problem, we must take care to prevent a backslide. But I am confident that many symptoms and illnesses can and will be resolved with this holistic approach.
When I see the light in my patient’s eyes when they have made a recovery using the system I introduced them to for their own wellness, all of the time and work I have spent becoming this healer, teacher, physician is all worth it. I see them having hope again, and becoming determined to be in control of their own bodies instead of the other way around, It’s truly freeing.
Now, as I enter a new phase of my life, I have used the same principles to take control, and I believe there are many women like myself out there.
Professionals, career women who are used to being strong and outperforming everyone, now struggling to do so as a result of a “normal part of the aging process”. That quote makes me laugh now…as if sudden dysfunction of our brains “brain fog” could be considered normal! I couldn’t accept that, nor should you. You’ve worked too hard, for too long! Then, along comes fatigue…it has been so frustrating, despite doing everything we are told, losing our ambition to continue the fight because we get exhausted!
If this sounds familiar, if you are looking for an answer and are motivated to make a few changes, I can help you. Together we can look for the cause of your illness, symptoms and your loss of vitality. Lets get started living our best lives, there is a lot more to do, but we need our best selves!
